September Report - Plenary Meeting

The September Plenary Meeting was held at the Leaders Saloon in the IB Electrical Engineering and Computer Science West Tower of Nagoya University on Friday, September 26. The main topic was presentations using interactive digital posters. The highlights are summarized below.

What is a digital poster?

A digital poster is a poster that employs an image display device and digital technology. Unlike a conventional poster, which prints information on a sheet of paper or cloth, a digital poster displays information on an LCD or via a projector. Digital posters can be updated in real time, display videos, and scale the size of characters and figures. Although the increased freedom of expression demands a higher level of presentation skills, information is better conveyed. Because participants in the real-world data circulation program practice their presentation skills, they will be well prepared when digital poster presentations become commonplace.

Evaluation criteria for posters

Poster contents and presentation skills significantly affect presentation quality. This meeting covered the evaluation criteria for easy-to-understand posters and presentations, which include:

  • Impact

  • Title, Overall Appearance, Interest

  • Content

  • Quality, Main Points

  • Organization

  • Logical Structure, Text Size, Text/Graphics Balance

  • Presentation

  • Communication and Questions

It was stressed that considering these criteria while preparing posters and practicing beforehand greatly improve presentations.

Practice presentations using digital posters

To wrap up the monthly plenary meeting, some of the participants of the real-world data circulation program gave presentations using digital posters to share student-lead projects, including their progress and future plans. The audience evaluated each presentation based on the above criteria. The tallied results will be discussed at the next plenary meeting.
