Workshop 2018.11.26
In the November Plenary Meeting, students reported on their research internships and Global Challenge II. Afterwards, the upcoming Industry-Academia collaboration Ideathon / Hackathon Program was discussed.
Date | Monday, November 26th, 2018 17:00-20:00 |
---|---|
Place | Nagoya University Higashiyama Campus, IB West Tower 6F, Leaders Studio |
Here is a short summary of the topic discussed:
In the research internship, students visit a business relevant to their research, where they learn about the structure and management of research conducted in a business. This time, one student reported on his experiences during his research internship.
Other than his research topic, he also discussed experiences and viewpoints encountered during the research internship. He enjoyed, that he could work with real-data, solving problems which occurred in live services. Mr. Zhang used natural language processing approaches like Word2Vec or Doc2Vec to preprocess the data. He then researched the similarity of different documents. The documents were medical records, where he could receive a high accuracy using his approach. He discussed the challenges of medical abbreviations and similar special terms.
The internship took place as follows:
Student | Hongkuan Zhang (Fifth inaugural class, Informatics) |
---|---|
Location | NEC |
Theme | Applying Natural Language Processing to Medical Records |
In the Global Challenge II, students visit a top-tier international research institution. While participating in competitive research, they can practice the communication and interaction with international researchers. This time, one student reported her experiences during the Global Challenge II. Ms. Yin explained how she could develop her personal skills while experiencing the atmosphere at a Japanese research facility, how she came in contact with HPC systems for her research, and how the Global Challenge II made a positive impact on her English and Japanese language skills. During the 6 months, she gained these personal skills while growing more interested in the field HPC.
The Global Challenge II took place as follows:
Student | Jie Yin (First inaugural class, Information Science) |
---|---|
Location | RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) |
Topics | RIKEN's super computer "K", HPC OS for next-generation super computers and related software systems engineering |
In the Industry-academia collaboration Ideathon/Hackathon program, affiliated enterprises provide AI-, IoT- or BigData-related problems and topics for groups of students to solve. Multiple ambitious groups of graduate students compete to brainstorm novel ideas and business models for conquering these issues. This time, after receiving a problem setting by an affiliated enterprise, the students were divided into four work groups. In a group-phase, they brainstormed ideas and hypotheses on how to approach the data analysis. While expressing interesting ideas, it was discussed which additional data would be needed, as well as how to implement them. There will be a mid-term presentation of the preliminary results of each group in the December Plenary Meeting. The group work will conclude with the final results presented in the January Plenary Meeting.
