Workshop 2019.05.27
In the May Plenary Meeting, students reported on their Research Internship and Global Challenge II. Then, the proposals for this year's Creative Research Project were announced.
Date | Monday, May 27th, 2019 17:00-20:00 |

Here is a summary of each topic:
In a research internship, students visit a business and engage in a research project. There, they can experience the structure and management of enterprise research facilities. This time, one student reported in his research internship. Other than details on the research topic, he also talked about his intentions for participating in the research internship, as well as his experiences and knowledge gained.
Mr. Hatasa worked on determining an optimal thermal radiation design for integrated circuits. He attempted to solve this problem in two steps: first, developing a temperature distribution estimation model using machine learning, second, developing an interactive simulation tool that enables engineers to discuss issues in real time. In his report, he stated that the interactive simulation tool allowed them to estimate the temperature distribution faster than a more basic simulation without losing accuracy.
Here is a summary of the research internship:

Location | Panasonic Corporation |
Topic | Panasonic Corporation |
In Global Challenge II, students visit a top-tier international research institution. While participating in competitive research, they can practice communication and interaction with international researchers. This time, four students reported on their experiences during the Global Challenge II.
They reported that by receiving guidance from top-level researchers, they had a rewarding experience in studying how to tackle research problems. Regarding differences to the academic environment at a university, they experienced that the research groups had a higher level of security, but also a higher feeling of union.
There were also students whose research topic during the Global Challenge II was different from their research topic at university. Thus, during this project, they could study a wide knowledge of modeling tasks and frameworks related to machine learning.
The following shows the students participating in this Global Challenge II and the research institution it took place at:
Student | Takahiro Yamakoshi (Third inaugural class, Graduate School of Informatics) |
---|---|
Location | Kasetsart University (Thailand) |
Topic | Natural Language Processing in Thai and e-Legislation |
Student | Xinxian Zhang (Second inaugural class, Graduate School of Engineering) |
---|---|
Location | Technical University of Madrid (Spain) |
Topic | On supporting turbulence theory with mechanical simulations |
Student | Hong Xu (Third inaugural class, Graduate School of Economics) |
---|---|
Location | The Institute of Statistical Mathematics (ISM) |
Topic | Solving imbalanced data problems in databases for SMEs |
Student | Hatem Abdelhameed Darweesh (First inaugural class, Graduate School of Information Science) |
---|---|
Location | Linaro |
Topic | Platform analysis for autonomous driving system development |
The following projects were proposed for this year's Creative Research Project. Each proposal has been evaluated by students, internal professors, and business mentors. The evaluation was based on four criteria related to the problem definition, the proposed solution, and so on. The selected proposals will be part of research during this year.
