Report on RWDC Consortium Kick-off Symposium 2019

After five and a half years of the RWDC Leading Program, the Real-World Data Circulation Consortium Kick-off Symposium was held in March 2019, promoting the results of recent Industry-Academia research collaborations.

DateTuesday, March 26, 2019, 13:00-17:00
LocationNagoya University Higashiyama Campus, Engineering and Science Building, ES Hall

There is a summary of each session below:

Development and value creation through data science education

Prof. Kazuya Takeda
(RWDC Leading Program Coordinator)

The RWDC Leading Program Coordinator Prof. Kazuya Takeda introduced the activities of the Real-World Data Circulation Consortium. In his presentation, Prof. Takeda introduced various activities that have been implemented in the Leading program so far, and how new research collaboration projects like the "Industry-Academia Collaboration Program" and the "Industry-Academia Collaboration Ideathon-Hackathon Program" developed. In addition, through various research projects and venture companies started by the students, the program created significant value for the academic and industrial world.

Report on Industry-Academia Research Collaboration (1)

Yusuke Ito(Toyota Tsusho Corp. IT Strategy Department)
Shogo Seki(RWDC Leading Program, Second inaugural class)

As one example of an industry-academia collaboration project, a project in collaboration with Toyota Tsusho Corporation was introduced. Mr. Yusuke Ito introduced the outline of the research project "Towards utilizing measured chicken farming data," the problems they tried to solve, and project results. Mr. Shogo Seki, a second inaugural class student, outlined the provided real-world data, the flow of the project, and the business knowledge obtained by their data analysis. Lastly, they discussed the experiences gained through this project, being able to gain experience in team development and how to research in a company.

Report on Industry-Academia Research Collaboration (2)

Akihiro Sato(Benesse Educational Research and Development Institute)
Nozomu Ohashi(RWDC Leading Program, Fourth inaugural class)

Another industry-academia cooperation project was the Ideathon-Hackathon joint program in collaboration with the Benesse Education Research and Development Institute. Mr. Sato Akihiro outlined the research project "Joint research on how to develop self-learning skills using history learning data," the expectations of the industry-academia collaboration project as a company, and the results obtained. Mr. Nozomu Ohashi, a fourth inaugural class student, gave an overview of the data analysis approaches employed to the provided real-world dataset, and their research findings. One of the reasons why useful results for business services could be obtained during the project was that a multi-disciplinary analysis of data was possible with a graduate student team consisting of various backgrounds like it is typical for graduate student projects of the Leading program.

Poster session

Seventeen students from the RWDC Leading program gave a poster presentation on their research topics and the research they conducted in the Leading program. Active discussions were held with people from various industries who participated in the Symposium.

Please refer to this list for a summary of all research topics at the poster session.
